The Reel Breakdown
Demo Eel
00:00-00:08
A play on the words demo reel and demolition eel. Based on the banana eel, a goldentail moray eel morph. I'm a big fan of eels, they can spend time on land and are very curious explorers. They might not have eyelids, but they do have an extra set of jaws, in their throat to pull in prey. Pretty neat.
The eel was sculpted in Zbrush, textured in substance painter, then retopologized, and animated in Maya. Props made in maya.
Robot Run
00:08-00:11
This clip is my first attempt at applying animation to a real scene. When I travel I often like to take iphone videos wherever I go. As a kid I would imagine something with inhuman speed, effortlessly running alongside the train, car, ect. Which was comforting to me though in hindsight sounds quite horrifying. Animated in Blender, additionally using the Motion Graphics editing feature of Blender, which I found more convenient, than its After Effects counterpart.

Elephant Enrichment Toy
00:12-00:20
Responsible for all animation, partial toy design, toy 3d modeling, and partial fabrication. This animation was made in Blender and was used to show our enrichment toy proposal. Context for the project: we were tasked with designing enrichment toys for two elderly elephants at the Buttonwood Zoo. Originally following the idea of a weeble wobble, the goal was for the elephants to be able to hit it for treats to come out, without the toy being knocked down. After learning one of the elephants had an old injury (enabling her to lift her trunk high) we decided to create a more adaptable design. When stepping on the solid wood base, the food in the basin at the middle, would roll out towards the elephant.. To make this a bit more interactive, we proposed a ball inside, effectively blocking the opening so the elephant would have to stand on, or move the teeter in another direction, as the food would not continuously flow out. The basin was welded metal, with 4 holes and a top that can be locked by a keeper, after filling. We used bolts rather than screws, as the elephants had a history of unscrewing any nuts or screws. After several months of redesigning and fabricating, we were unfortunately not able to see our toy presented to the elephants, as it was so heavy that the trailer broke beneath it. While this was a disappointing oversight, we were able to help our classmates set up their enrichment toys at the zoo and observe the animals interacting with them.

Miles Morales
00:22-00:30
Responsible for all animation. Made in Maya. For this animation I wanted to depict someone struggling to pick up a heavy object. Who better than Miles, a hero who has just started learning how to use his powers. I am an avid comic book reader and loved Into The Spiderverse. Before I could read comics myself, my dad would take me to see the Spiderman movies directed by Sam Raimi. His style of darker sort of light macabre influenced my taste greatly.

Responsible for all animation. Made in Maya. During this exercise my intention was to attempt to translate a 2d scene into 3d without losing its form.
